December ride

I drove home from Taylorsville and rolled down my window to enjoy the warm surge. Then I decided to put down a few miles on my mountain bike. It was a muddy mess, but I haven't had one of those for a while. It was on my way home that I realized I can't hose my bike off. I needed the ride, and so did Max.The way a mountain bike should look.

Disturbing behavior

I just finished a five month project with my brother-in-law at a company that shall remain nameless. During that time I have been a witness to the most disturbing bathroom behavior I have ever experienced. This was perpetrated by young and old alike, and is not exaggerated in any way. In random order:
1. Texting while standing at the urinal.
2. Speaking on the phone in Spanish while standing at the urinal.
3. Superman pose with both hands on the hips while standing at the urinal.
4. Allowing the pants to fall down at the urinal and holding them in place by spreading the legs.
5. Zipping up pants while walking to the sink.
6. Standing at the sink with pants undone tucking in shirt.
7. Talking to me like I know you while standing at the urinal, then watching me wash my hands as you walk out of the bathroom without washing your hands.
8. When there were only three urinals working, choosing the middle one so someone has to stand right next to you.

These behaviors must stop immediately. These offenses are criminal. At least I'm not there to see it anymore. I saw more in my five months there than my 10 years at my prior employer. What is wrong with people?

Upgrade

This is the Casio G'Zone Boulder phone. I like to refer to it as the Jack Bauer phone because it is shock, water and dust resistant. It has served me well on many mountain bike crashes, and has a flashlight and electronic compass. It is the best phone I've owned.Last night I bought this Samsung Fascinate smart phone. The first App I downloaded was Chuck Norris facts. I added the scriptures, General Conference addresses, movie soundboards and stock quotes. I was up until 1:30 AM learning how to use the phone. I'm blown away by how powerful it is. I can schedule appointments for my Bishop from my phone, which will make my calling much easier. I will miss my Jack Bauer phone, but I will get to see it often since my daughter has taken possession of it. The Fascinate will keep me busy for a long time.

Happy Truckers Day

Today is Truckers Day. I have kept my CDL as my Plan G. Everyone should have a backup plan. Or a backup to the backup. My dad's neighbor pushed Orem to outlaw engine brakes down University Parkway because he wanted to sleep with his window open without hearing the occasional engine brake. Engine brakes are used to preserve the air brakes, which fail once the air pressure is gone. But we should outlaw safety so you aren't occasionally inconvenienced. Everything we have was on a truck or train at one time. We would not have food, clothes, cars or houses if it weren't for trucking. Needless to say that neighbor was a complete scemo. I support truckers everyone. 10-4 good buddy. Over and out.

Hello, old friend

I had physical therapy this evening, so I got home before the sun went down. That was weird. I was going to go for a quick ride when my son asked if he could go. Max got excited when I asked if he wanted to go for a ride. The three of us headed out for the jump pit near Silver Lake. The dirt was very loose from the ATV's and motorcycles, but it felt good to get on the bike. I took it as an opportunity to be outside and enjoy nature and being on my bike instead of a hard exercise session. I thought I would be able to put down hundreds of miles this summer, but that didn't work out. Riding with my son and dog was a great experience.

Kevin and I were talking about balance this morning. I think it is very hard to achieve balance on a daily basis when you work 12+ hours a day. I think of it as driving down the highway. You stay within the lane markers, but you drift left and right as you go. Too far left and you come back right. I think sometimes balance has to be achieve over a longer period of time. Biking definitely helps be achieve balance and puts most wrong things right.

More stupid sayings

David commented on my post about stupid things people say, which triggered more.

ATM machine. You mean and automated teller machine machine?
PIN number. Personal identification number number?
VIN number. Vehicle identification number number?
"I could care less." That means you care.
"Imuna." I'm going to. I know it's hard, but use your tongue. And you saved so much time by being lazy.
"My bad." It is your fault, but that is such a tired phrase. So shut up.
"It's all good." You are so Zen. It's not all good. Your speech isn't good. Your stupid tight skater pants aren't good either.
"TMI. TMI." Think of something else to say, like "I didn't need to know that."

And stop speaking the way you text. No one really wants to know how ignorant you are, so stop talking.

Top experiences of my life

I started a Top 25 Experiences of My Life list several years ago, along with a BID List. The BID List was my "Before I Die" list, which came out way before The Bucket List movie. I can't find the BID List, but I did find the top experiences list I started. In no particular order:
  • Yosemite
  • Fathers & Sons outings with Dad
  • Eagle Scout
  • Playing piano at College Park graduation
  • Temple endowment
  • Mission
  • First dream in Italian
  • Graduate from BYU
  • 5/30/1996
  • Raven born
  • Sidnee born
  • Mason born
  • Jaxon born
  • Dream about Sidnee being blond before she was born
  • Name and bless children
  • 100 mile bike ride- twice
  • Bushi Ban black belt
  • Fathers & Sons outings with Mason and Jaxon
  • Buy my first house. Was that a mistake?
  • Washington, DC trip
  • Live session in SLC Temple
  • Met Jeffrey R. Holland
  • Girls camp with Raven and DeLana
  • Family hike up Mt. Timpanogos

At first I wanted to collect the 25 best experiences of my life, but then I decided that I shouldn't limit the number since I hope to fill my life with great experiences, and I want to live a long time. Until I don't want to live, in which time I will want to die.

Stop saying stupid things

I'm sick of all the stupid things people say, so I am going to vent.

"What it is is....." Don't you see the problem with that?
"May or may not...." Are there any other options? You may or may not be stupid, but you are.
"Just barely...." Both words mean the same thing in this context. "I just got up." "I barely got up."
"Every single...." "You say stupid things every single time." Lose the single.
"Each and every...." They mean the same thing, so stop it. You are dumb and stupid.
"Whole entire...." I'm glad you said that. Whole leaves part out, and entire leaves part out, so together you it all covered.
And my favorite- "Your guyses...." "What are your guyses plans?" Learn to speak English. "What are your plans?" English has a plural just like vosotros in Spanish and voi in Italian. Stop being an idiot.

MMA beats Boxing

Randy Couture fought boxer James Toney in UFC 118 tonight. It was a classic match of two veterans who had to fight their fight to pull out a victory. Randy Couture knew he couldn't stand toe to toe with Toney, and we all knew Toney couldn't survive on the ground with Couture. The question then becomes who will be able to control the fight. Randy Couture was the best qualified fighter to take on a boxer with over 75 wins. Couture struck gold with his first takedown attempt, and spent the next few minutes setting up for the choke that ended the fight. Always the gentleman, Couture praised Toney for being the first boxer with the guts to step in to the Octagon. All this from a 47-year old. Go Captain America!

Good thing I'm not a doctor

I met with the orthopedic surgeon to get the results of my MRI and X-rays. I did not tear my rotator cuff, but there is evidence of the dislocation. He gave me a shot and is sending me to physical therapy so see if that helps. I can still mountain bike, as long as I don't crash. I think I can do that. Maybe?

MRI

Today I had an MRI on my shoulder. I get the results on Tuesday when I meet with the doctor that made my other shoulder bionic. I dislocated said shoulder almost four months ago in a sparring accident and it was out for about 40 minutes, during which time my arm was paralyzed. It sucked. I was hoping I could nurse it back to health, but that hasn't worked. I'm guessing torn rotator cuff. Regardless, I'm pretty sure I know where this is heading, and I'd prefer to get there as soon as I can.

Girls Camp at Mutual Dell

Today we got back from Girls Camp at Mutual Dell in American Fork Canyon. I was the Priesthood representation from our ward that stayed the whole time. The girls did a confidence course with four stations, and Mike Thomas and I manned the 12 foot high rope wall. Several of the girls and leaders said they couldn't climb the wall, but we helped them make it over. That afternoon we did the zip line. This is me being awesome.

We also went to Tibble Fork with the canoes. That resulted in a water fight, dead fish toss and one girl taking a swim. Everyone learned a lesson about me that day. We hiked from Silver Lake up to a higher lake with a spectacular view. It was sad to see the week come to an end. I made good friends with both the girls and the leaders, and it was fun to be there with DeLana and Raven for her first year.

Moab

Nate McArthur and I went to Moab on Thursday night to catch up with our Scouts. We rode Slickrock on Friday, putting down a tough 11.3 miles in 95 degree heat. It was a blast. This is Nate on one of the most technical sections of Slickrock.

This is James Hoffman on the same technical section.

This is me on the technical section.

This is Nate spraying the nearly dead boys at the pavilion on the Slickrock trailhead. It's amazing what experience will teach you. Nate, James and I did the full Slickrock ride with Jed, Nate and Connor. The boys all ran out of water. The adults drank a lot and carried plenty of water, but the rationing took everything we had.

Today Nate and I stopped by Poison Spider Bikes to ask about other local rides. Gina turned us on to Amassa Back. Though it wasn't impressive for the first 15-20 minutes, it turned out to be a fantastic ride. It was a very technical ride for most of the seven miles out, which was great on the way back. This is a cliff section at the start of the ride.

Me with my Cannondale Gemini at the end of the trail with the Colorado River in the background. This bike may not be built for climbing, but I can hold my own on most of Slickrock and Amassa Back. It excelled on the way back from Amassa Back, and saved me from two close calls. It soaked up the technical slickrock and shale, and took the drop offs without missing a beat. It was a great 14 mile ride. Nate blew his tire about one mile from the car, but that was the extent of our of mechanical problems. After a $5 footlong at Subway we headed back to PSB to thank Gina for the suggestion. It was a fantastic weekend of riding.

Pony Express Days Century Ride

Today was the Pony Express Days Century Ride in Eagle Mountain. I rode with Paul Jerome, Jeremy and Ben Byerly. We started at the elementary school in city center, headed over Unity Pass and connected to Redwood Road. From there is was a 33 mile shot to Elberta. We worked well as a group and maintained about 25 MPH for most of that section. After a pit stop in Elberta we began the climb to Eureka. I was able to maintain a steady pace and felt great when I got to the top. That was about 50 miles.

This is a picture of us leaving Eureka after the lunch break. The next 60+ miles were tough as we had a headwind the whole way. That really took it's toll on me. The good news is my lower back never bugged me. Let's hear it for the Specialized Roubaix. I was hoping we would finish around five hours, but the wind made it just over seven hours. We have five pit stops along the way with food and water, but DeLana and Susan running support vehicles was a life saver.

This is a picture of me at the finish line, 112 miles later.

This is a picture of my odometer. I wanted to do the ride because it was the first Century Ride that Pony Express Days has sponsored, and it is the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express.

Here is a link to the map and details of the ride:

Fathers and Sons outing

Last night I took my boys to the Heber Valley Camp for our Fathers and Sons outing. We took a hike to wear the boys out. It was such a beautiful area and nice to get away for one night, even if I didn't sleep well.

This is a picture from our hike taken with my Canon PHD camera.Another picture from our hike.

The boys had a great time and it was fun to spend time with them.

It's a special kind of pain

This is a picture of my shoulder during surgery two years ago. It's not supposed to look like that. I dislocated my shoulder eight times before the surgery, but I was always able to put it back in within one minute. Today I dislocated my other shoulder during sparring, and it was out for about 35-40 minutes. We tried to put it back in, but I could tell it was much worse than the other eight times on the other shoulder. As I drove to see Master Pierce, my Karate instructor and chiropractor, my arm became paralyzed and I wasn't able to move my fingers. Then my other arm started to go numb. It's hard to drive a standard transmission car with half an arm. Master Pierce was able to put it back in place, and I immediately regained the use of my hand. I've been putting ice on it all afternoon. There really is no other pain like a dislocation. It's hard to explain if you haven't had the pleasure. Hopefully the damage is minimal. That makes 18 stitches, three broken toes and nine dislocated shoulders. Bring on the resurrection.

Anza knives

I took my oldest daughter and her friend to the Crossroads of the West gun show yesterday. I just passed my insurance exam so I figured I deserved to buy an inexpensive knife. I found an Anza knife for $40. The top knife is the one I bought yesterday. The bottom knife is one I bought over a year ago. These knives are made out of files and each is made by hand. You can see minor imperfections in the handle or grind, and it is just a cool knife. It's nice to get a customer knife without paying $300. You can learn more about Anza knives at www.anzaknives.com.

Juniper playground

Mike Both and I went for a ride on the improved Juniper trail today. This is a new jump that Cougar built during the winter. It's a great practice jump. This is a new wood structure that Cougar built recently. Mike Both with a flawless execution.

81%

I passed my dreaded Insurance Exam today. I took the practice final exam yesterday with a 77%. That made me mad since I thought I was doing much better on the test. My wife and daughters helped me study last night and this morning and we wiped it out. I'm glad that's over. Step 2 in process.

The End of An Era & My New Suit

It's very interesting how things happen. I lost my job at E*Trade on Thursday after working there for almost 10 years. In a way I didn't see it coming, but I've also known a change was coming since July 2009. I just didn't know what it was. On Tuesday I felt like there was something just outside my field of vision that I couldn't identify. Now I know what it was. It shocked a lot of people I worked with and I was amazed at how many people reached out to me. I really liked my job, but I loved the people I worked with. I have great friends at E*Trade, and I hope to be able to keep in touch with all of them. E*Trade gave me a great severance package based on my time served, so we have time to figure things out.

I bought a blue suit with my E*Trade bonus, because I only had a brown suit. I felt like I needed a good suit for weddings, funerals and job interviews. A few weeks ago I went to Neldon Walters' funeral in American Fork. Wednesday I wore it to Logan's sealing. That's pretty much the same as a wedding. And soon I will wear it to a job interview. Maybe I shouldn't have bought the suit? Yeah right. Things happen for a reason, and this is no different. I believe that my next job will be one that I wouldn't be able to find while at E*Trade. I haven't actively looked for a job in over three years, and I had no reason to look now. One thing I know for sure is that I'm not driving this car. I see more clearly now why recent events have happened the way they did. We just paid off most of our debt and bought the Mazda Protege'. I wanted to hold on to that money, but now we have a reliable commuter car. It's exciting to see how things are being revealed. This doesn't always happen for me, so I think there are important things that I am supposed to learn. I wrote things on my 2K10 card that I wanted to focus on, like slowing down, listening and breathing. I think now I will learn to do that. Everything is going to be fine.

Maunaleo

I hate it when people have playlists on their blogs because I usually don't like their music and it interferes with me listening to Pandora and checking out their blog at the same time. Tonight I make an exception. I had a few minutes so I checked out Shawn and Jill's blog to see the pictures of their babies. This was the only song on Jill's playlist, so I went to YouTube to see what I could find.
This is one of the most peaceful and beautiful songs I have ever heard. Part of it may have been the fact that I was seeing pictures of Sam and Charlotte at the same time, but it really touched my heart. It made me realize how much I miss Shawn and Jill, and how I hate missing out on seeing their kids grow up. We love and miss you guys. And I really want to go to Hawaii.

285,000 vs. 103,000

I hate it when I don't achieve my goals. I had a goal to drive my Toyota Camry to 300,000 miles before I had to replace it. This week I took it in for the safety and emissions test and it failed safety. In a big way. Brakes, strut, power steering pump, driver side window. It would cost a considerable amount to fix, so we started looking for another car. Lame. I bought the Camry nine years and 150,000 miles ago when it had 135,000 miles. That was a fantastic choice. That car served me well. Today was my last day of driving the Camry to work. I had to drive up and down the street a few times, but it landed on 285,000 miles when I got home.

Yesterday we bought a 2000 Mazda Protege' with 103,000 miles. It was the newest car with the fewest miles in our price range, so we were able to pay cash and avoid a car payment. It even came with a Yakima bike rack. That worked out well since I can't get my bike rack off the Camry. I'm not sure if the locks are frozen or rusted from being on the car in bad weather for several years, but I win. And it's a manual transmission. That rules.

Noelle's Olympic run

Noelle had her third and fourth Skeleton runs tonight. She missed the podium by .10 second after the four runs were tallied. She didn't get a medal, but she is fourth place in the world. How awesome is that? I really wanted to see her get a medal, but I am so proud of what she has done. She overcame adversity to make it on the Olympic team, and she put it all on the line. It has been really cool to go to Park City and see her race in the last two years, and we will always remember that. More important that how she finished is how she got there and the person she is. Noelle and Janson are great people that are grounded in the important things in life, and we are glad to call them our friends. We can't wait for them to get back home.

Olympics

Our friend Noelle Pickus-Pace is competing in skeleton in the Olympics in Whistler, British Columbia. This is a picture of her during one of her runs tonight. After two runs she is ranked 5th, putting her .16 of a second behind a Bronze medal and .55 seconds behind a Gold medal. Tomorrow night will be the third and fourth runs, which should be televised live. She is going to tear it up. Energy drink

I had my last energy drink on August 13, 2008. I believe it was a Monster Lo-Carb. I had to stop because I was drinking 1-2 a day. It was expensive, and that's a lot of poison. Today I tried a Bios Life Smart Energy that my neighbor gave me. I only drank half the can because Clint Hansen knocked it over with the basketball. It kind of tastes like a fruity Von Dutch, but without the aftertaste. I am not going back to energy drinks as a practice, and I am back off most soda and caffeine. I am master of my domain.

And bronchitis sucks.

Michael Stuy Photography

I added a new link to my blog- Michael Stuy Photography. Mike is our HR Business Partner at work, and I just recently discovered his interest in photography. He showed me his web site today, and I really liked his pictures. I decided to dust off my camera and get back in to photography, so I thought his web site would be a nice addition.
